Whether you’re looking to celebrate Cinco de Mayo or an upcoming Taco Tuesday, this bold & festive carne asada will help you do so in style (and with happy taste buds). With a flank steak or skirt steak and some simple ingredients, you can create the perfect protein for whatever Mexican dish your heart desires. A citrusy, smoky marinade helps elevate the meat to create restaurant-quality tacos, burritos, nachos, fajitas and more. For this recipe, we’re focusing on Mexican-style street tacos.
MARINADE INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
1/4 cup fresh orange juice
1/4 cup olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 jalapeño seeded and minced (increase or decrease based on desired spice level)
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 handful fresh cilantro, chopped
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
YOU’LL ALSO NEED:
Flank steak or skirt steak (1-2 lbs recommended, depending on how much meat you want!)
Corn tortillas
RECOMMENDED TOPPINGS:
Hot sauce (we recommend our jalapeño hot sauce!)
Diced white onion
Cilantro
Cotija cheese
Avocado or guacamole
A squeeze of lime juice
INSTRUCTIONS:
- In a bowl, whisk together the lime juice, orange juice and olive oil.
- Add the minced garlic, jalapeño, white vinegar and chopped cilantro to the mixture.
- Season with cumin, smoked paprika, black pepper and salt. Stir until well combined.
- Place your beef (we recommend skirt steak or flank steak) in a shallow dish or a resealable plastic bag.
- Pour the marinade over the beef, making sure it Is well-coated on all sides.
- Seal the dish or bag and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to 4 hours for deeper flavour.
- When ready to cook, remove the beef from the marinade and grill to your desired doneness.
- Let rest for about five minutes and slice against the grain. Dice the pieces smaller to fit better in tacos if you prefer.
- Scoop a bit of meat into each tortilla (tip: double up the tortillas to make your tacos a bit sturdier) and top with your desired toppings, including our jalapeño hot sauce.
